"Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word happy would lose it's meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. It is far better take things as they come along with patience and equanimity." Carl Jung
To me, I think this means that happiness wouldn't mean anything if it was perfect. Life is not perfect and if it is then something is seriously wrong. You have to be sad once in a while because if you think about it, once the sadness is gone and you made it, then the happiness that comes right after, is the best part. Being happy is not a given, you have to make your own happiness because if you rely on other people to make you happy and they don't then you will not get yourself anywhere and you will be completely unhappy.
In my personal experience it has happened. Which is why I understand this quote. It's the same thing with love. If your relationship is perfect, you never fight, always happy, then that's bad. You would think that it would be good but it's actually not. Your not allowing yourself to feel anything more. You have to feel pain because honestly in my opinion, love wouldn't mean anything of we didn't get hurt once in a while or get our hearts broken. It sucks but that just proves that it's real. It's all a part of life. Happiness is the same way. You have to be able to feel more than one emotion to become happy eventually. My mom always tells me "People will always leave, but if once in a while they didn't leave, then they wouldn't be able to come back, and the reunion is the best part." It's true because when someone leaves you, it's the worst feeling in the world but when you see each other again, it gives you great happiness!
I don't think you would feel alive if once in a while you weren't sad, or you didn't shed a few tears. You have to allow yourself to feel pain before you can be happy. He says "without a measure of darkness." Which he has a point there because everyday we see commendable amount of darkness everyday. Every morning the sun comes up and there is the light. However, every night the sun goes down and right before the moon comes out, there is a little bit of time where it's just pure darkness in the world, then the moon is out and up and brightens the sky up. That is really like how we are as people. At one moment everything could be perfect and then in a second it could all just go black. It stays that way for a while and then it brightens up again because sadness and pain doesn't last forever. Everything gets better in time.
Those people out there who say their life is absolutely perfect, are complete and I mean complete Bullshitters!! The reason for this is because it's not true. Nothing is perfect. Especially our emotions. You just have to put them to good use because if your causing yourself or anyone else so much pain in life then it will only screw you over in the end. You have to give happiness, to get it. "it's far better to take thins as they come along with patience and equanimity." By this I think he means that there are some things that you just cant control, and you will just have to take it all in, in a positive way because it will hurt but you must have the patience to deal with it.
